La selección de obras resalta la tensión entre pasado y futuro, entre preservación y cambio, presentando obras que buscan trascender en el tiempo manteniendo su esencia y su contexto original. La artesanía española es reconocida internacionalmente por su rica herencia, calidad y meticulosa atención al detalle. Ha dado lugar a una producción atemporal que muestra la belleza y el patrimonio creativo de todos sus territorios.

El dominio de materiales y técnicas, unido a la capacidad creativa, se ha convertido en un patrón reconocido, siendo un valor que ha continuado a lo largo de los años y se ha transmitido de generación en generación.

Un ejemplo claro de esta herencia es el trabajo del arquitecto Antoni Gaudí, quien creía que la artesanía tenía un papel vital para lograr la armonía entre su visión arquitectónica y el mundo natural. Sus obras son hoy en día un testimonio de la relación simbiótica entre la arquitectura y la artesanía, mostrando la belleza que emerge cuando manos hábiles dan vida a diseños visionarios. Las obras de Gaudí siguen siendo creaciones con alma, llenas de materia, genialidad y maestría en cada uno de sus detalles. El alma unida a la materia es lo que esta exposición ha querido compartir a través de la presentación de una treintena de creadores y la exhibición de más de 160 obras. Esta visión, expresada por el escritor Stefan Zweig en su presentación ‘El
Misterio de la Creación Artística’, describe el momento en el cual el artista, a través de sus manos y su esencia, se sumerge en un mundo paralelo. Zweig escribió:

“La creación es un acto sobrenatural en una esfera espiritual que escapa a toda observación’. … ‘Si el artista está “fuera de sí mismo” mientras crea, ¿dónde se encuentra? La respuesta es muy simple: se encuentra en su obra. Mientras crea, no vive en nuestro mundo, sino en el mundo de su obra, y por eso mismo es incapaz de observarse a sí mismo’. … ‘Ninguna obra de arte se manifiesta a primera vista en toda su grandeza y profundidad. No solo quiere ser admirada, sino también comprendida’… ‘Cuanto más nos esforzamos por profundizar en los misterios del arte y del espíritu, tanto más los admiraremos por su inmensidad. No hay mayor deleite y satisfacción que reconocer que también al hombre se le ha dado la capacidad de crear valores imperecederos, y que quedamos eternamente unidos a lo eterno mediante nuestro esfuerzo supremo en la tierra: el arte.”

En consonancia con esta visión, y en un momento actual en el que la tendencia hacia lo digital supera cualquier expectativa, resulta emocionante y enriquecedor experimentar obras que se basan en el mundo físico, creadas por manos de artistas y que podemos tocar, sostener y comprender. A través de Soul+Matter, he querido crear una experiencia que transmita la contención de la historia en instantes llenos de materia y alma, mostrando la pasión y valentía por la creación que representa el ecosistema de la artesanía contemporánea española.

En palabras de otro escritor, Steven Pressfield, y su libro-manifiesto ‘La guerra del arte’: ‘Venimos a este mundo con un destino específico y personal. Tenemos una tarea que realizar, una llamada a la que responder, un ser en el que convertirnos.
Desde que nacemos, somos quienes somos y no podemos escapar de ello. Nuestra misión en esta vida no consiste en moldearnos según un ideal que imaginamos que debemos ser, sino en descubrir quiénes somos en realidad y ser fieles a nuestra verdadera esencia’.

Quiero expresar mi máximo respeto, devoción y gratitud hacia las creadoras y creadores participantes en la exposición por responder a esa llamada y por brindarnos la oportunidad de
disfrutar de sus creaciones y su trabajo. También quiero agradecer a todas las personas que me han dado la oportunidad de trabajar en este proyecto.

The selected works on display highlight the tension between past and future, between preservation and change, transcending time while maintaining their essence and original context.

Spanish craftsmanship is internationally recognised for its rich heritage, quality andmeticulous attention to detail, and has resulted in timeless production that showcases the beauty and
creative heritage of all its territories. The mastery of materials and techniques coupled with creative ability, has become a recognised standard and a heritage that has continued over the years, passed down from generation to generation.

A clear example of that heritage can be traced back to the work of architect Antoni Gaudí, who believed that craftsmanship played a vital role in achieving harmony between his architectural vision and the natural world. His works are a testament to the symbiotic relationship between architecture and craftsmanship, revealing the beauty that emerges when skilled hands bring visionary designs to life. Gaudí’s works continue to remain soulful creations full of matter, genius and mastery in every detail.

Soul + Matter unites these two elements presenting more than thirty artists in an exhibition of more than 160 works which reflect that same vision. A vision which that of the writer and creative soul, Stefan Zweig and his book titled ‘The Mystery of Artistic Creation’, so eloquently describes as those magical moments where the artist, through his hands and his essence is lost in a parallel world. Zweig wrote:

“Creation is a supernatural act in a spiritual sphere that is subtracted from all observation.” … “if the artist ‘stands outside himself’ while producing, where does he stand? The answer is very simple. He is in his work. While he creates, he does not live in his world, in our world, but in the world of his work, and for that very reason he is incapable of observing himself.” … “No work of art manifests itself at first sight in all its grandeur and depth. They not only want to be admired but also understood.”… “The more we strive to delve into the mysteries of art and the spirit, the more we will admire them for their incommensurability. I have no news of greater delight and satisfaction than to recognize that it is also given to man to create imperishable values, and that we remain eternally united to the eternal through our supreme effort on earth: through art.”

Equal to this vision, and at a current time when the trend towards the digital surpasses any expectations, there is something both truly exciting and nourishing about experiencing works that are grounded in the physical world, that were made by the hands of creators and that we can touch, hold and understand.

Soul+Matter creates an experience that conveys the containment of history in instances full of these elements. Sharing the inherent passion and courage for creation that the Spanish contemporary craft ecosystem represents.

In the words of Steven Pressfield and his bookmanifesto ‘The War of Art’: “We come into this world with a specific, personal destiny. We have a job to do, a calling to enact, a self to become. We are
who we are from the cradle, and we’re stuck with it. Our job in this lifetime is not to shape ourselves into some ideal we imagine we ought to be, but to find out who we already are and become it.”

With our utmost respect, devotion and gratitude for answering that call and for giving us the opportunity to enjoy their creations and their work.
